BEFORE AND AFTER: RE-COVERING A TRADITIONAL BOSTON LIVING ROOM- A VINTAGE SOFA AND LOVESEAT - MAKING SOMETHING OLD INTO SOMETHING NEW!

Katie and Cooper's Boston area living room after a furniture revival! (above)

Received an email from my very goood friend Katie who lives outside of Boston with her husband Cooper and their two adorable children. I've known Katie for years...she's always been smart and savvy and resourceful in everything she does...now she has proven this with a home decor dilemma she recently faced - reviving some vintage furniture to make it part of her lovely home.

Here's Katie's email:

"Hey Coco,

Great hearing from you! We need to make a plan to see each other! I am enjoying your site a lot and it is great to connect with you!

Here is something for your site. I also have a kitchen renovation I can send. Use this if you want, and if not, no problem. Here goes...

We have a fairly small living room and over the years we have acquired petite vintage furniture from here and there that seems to suit the room. Below is a vintage sofa we purchased on Craig's List for $200. We also have great-grandma's love seat and the funky slipper chair that was in my mother-in-law's attic for years.... no one wanted it because it was so... small. We love the lines and legs of these pieces but we needed to tie them together somehow! "

KATIE'S SOFA AFTER

"Next, we updated the old brown vintage sofa with a soft celery velvet and bold floral accents from the slipper chair.

The love seat was the biggest challenge, but we found a bold strip that added a certain freshness to the room.

When it all came together, we accomplished what we set out to do, by making what was once old, new again."

Thank you Katie for the wonderful before and after story...hope it will inspire others to find something old and make it new again!!!

More design dispatches from Katie and Cooper as they've recently taken on a major kitchen remodel!

MAKING SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING: AN OUTDOOR SPACE TRANSFORMED INTO A COMFY PARTY SPACE - MY SISTER'S PATIO!

Outdoor patio with white Barcelona inspired chairs, orchids and metal side tables

Outdoor patio with white Barcelona inspired chairs and sofa, heat lamps, orchids and metal side tables

This is an outdoor seating area I created for a party I threw last year for my sister, DS. This is the back patio of at her house in Bel-Air just off of Beverly Glen here in Los Angeles.

The goal was to take DS's bare back patio and make it feel comfortable and inviting for guests who were coming for an evening party. We had about 70 people total both indoors and out.

It was relatively easy. Color scheme was brown, white, green and silver to blend in with the lush greenery in the small patio space. I grounded the two seating areas with chocolate sisal rugs. For seating, I used a combination of Barcelona chair knock offs and Barcelona couch knock offs and some round chocatate upholstered stools. I used small metal accent tables side by side to create the coffee table in each seating group. For accessories, I found pillows with a mod circular pattern, chenille throws from Pottery Barn and small votive holders with mint green candles.

Finally, I added in orchids everywhere.

Tip - I rented most of the furniture and bought all of the accesories (rugs, pillows, throws, candles, orchids etc.)

Have a small space or even a large one...this table from CB2 seems like it could function in well in a small living room becaue you can see through the iron wire mesh - kind of like it is there but not there at the same time.
The round bubble shape can add playful curves to an angular modern space. Something to consider.

SMART DESIGN: AZ FINDS A BRILLIANT ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN THAT IS ON FIRE - MODULAR FIREPLACES MAKE BIG HEAT!

Environmentally friendly fireplace in a living room
EcoSmart Fire - Aspect - $6900 (above)

I know it is almost summer but this find is almost too good to be true! Might make you even want to bundle up in the summer months...but really more recommended for fall and winter.

AZ, my good friend here in LA, emailed me the other day saying she found the most amazing eco-friendly home idea ever...she said something like, "take a look at this link, these are the best". I blindly and automatically clicked on the link only to arrive at the EcoSmart Fire website..and once I saw what was there I immediately agreed.

An ingeneous Australian company has figured out a way to make fireplaces accessible to all and really ecologically friendly...might I say a green fireplace!

Imagine you own a small condo, house, loft or cottage and really want a fireplace but don't want to have to build a chimney and hearth and all that goes with it...here is your solution.

I love the modern sleek designs of these modular fireplace units. They blend in seemlessly and also stand out as distinctive in every setting - almost like a piece of art.

I love this round mirror from Wandrlust.com. It is hand carved and painted a bright shiny white. It is designed by L.A. interior decorators Ron Woodson & Jaime Rummerfield.

Maybe it can go with the shiny white patent stool in my next post!! I can see this piece livening up an entry way...adding a flirty elegance to any wall!

SEE THIS HOUSE: A HAMBURG HOUSE THAT WOULD MAKE ANY MOTHER PROUD - ESPECIALLY IF SHE WAS THE ONE WHO DESIGNED IT!

Exterior of a white Hamburg home with a red door
Nicky Graebert's second family home in Hamburg, Germany

ALL PHOTOS IN THIS POST COURTESY OF NICKY GRAEBERT , HIS MOM AND DAD!

Well here is another home...done in true Nicky Graebert's mom's style.

A traditional exterior, where conventional tradition is left at the front door...with interiors that are modern, playful, colorful and adventuresome. I like the fact that Nicky's mom uses color and lighting so wisely and boldly throughout her interiors.

In an earlier post, I showed you photos of a delightful first family home sent to me by Nicky Graebert of Hamburg, Germany. Nicky is the proud son of a design and decor enthusiast - his mom - Gabriele Schloss-Graebert .

As I said in my previous post, I met Nicky on A Small World...I actually was asking if anyone had photos they wanted to share of great designs and interiors. Nicky was the first to respond with a huge compliment to his mother, Gabriele, and her interior decor skills - she has artfully decorated three of the family's homes - as a hobby I might add!

Living and dining room with yellow walls and dark wood floor
Living and dining rooms (above)

In the dual living room dining room above, the dark hardwood floors are complimented with warm yellow walls. Modern well chosen minimal furniture provides conversation areas throughout the expansive room.

You'll notice both the color and from time to time you'll see antlers on the walls of the house...here's what Nicky writes:

"...I am glad you like the style. I don't mind if you use the pics as inspiration....

...the animals have been used mainly in one Hamburg home because the property is the extension of a huge park called "deer park". One part of the park is actually like a small zoo......don't worry we haven't killed these animals...some of them are like 100 years old...

...the colour is my fathers idea...he does it in all our homes......

Best of luck with your blog.

Regards,

Nicky"

Check out this all-in-one-kitchen above. It seems to have a sink, cooktop and storage all in one unit. I love the light art above this kitchen console. It seems it changes with the mood of the chef!

Bright color from Nicky's dad in the stairwell and in the bedroom provide a rich classic accent to an otherwise modern interior. Contrast these rooms with the serene appeal of the grey toned ultra modern spa-like bathroom below.

Again, another well crafted and well designed home by Nicky Graebert's mom, Gabriele (and his dad too we now have found)!

Thank you to the Graebart family for letting us "SEE THIS HOUSE"!!!
One more Graebart home to come....a lovely London pied-a-terre...stay tuned.

I never thought I was a fan of wallpaper or wall stickers (I just learned about wall stickers from my friend Alyssa a few weeks ago- see earlier post). I've always wonder why someone would wallpaper their walls or want to have objects appear on their walls...well that was my viewpoint until I came across Ferm Living's website. Ferm Living is a company based in Denmark. This Danish company designs modern wallpapers and wall stickers all featured in this post.

I love the wallpapers and wall stickers from Ferm Living. The wallpaper patterns are delicately decorative. Ferm Living's designs have a sophistication about them and a freshness. Makes you want to be in these rooms - surrounded by these lively light patterns.

The cool thing about wall stickers is that they are really easy to put up (Ferm Living even has a video on their site showing you how to put up the stickers) and more importantly, the stickers are really easy to remove. Easy and simple wall decor!

DESIGNER ROOM RECREATE: TWO COOL DINING ROOMS BY M.DESIGN INTERIORS - MAKING DINING A HIGH STYLE EVENT

Dining room by M. Design Interiors with a glass table, Philippe Starck Ghost Louis Chairs and a modern chandelier
Photo courtesy of M.Design Interiors (above)

M. Design Interiors, an L.A. based interior design firm run by Molly Luetkemeyer, created these airy and inviting dining spaces featured in this post.

While these dining rooms are 100% modern, they still manage to have a classic elegance to them. I like these rooms because they feel both formal and casual at the same time. You can imagine eating a refined meal in these spaces and also hanging out in them for a relaxed Sunday morning brunch.

In the first dining room (above) she uses Philippe Starck ghost chairs to surround a glass dining table. I love the art...a huge frame with a light pink muted graphic design. This room is the ultimate in simplicity yet feels very luxurious.

In this dining room, M.Design Interiors used the glittering mirror as the centerpiece and focal point of this room. It provides a lively and festive backdrop for the serene and clean lines of the dining room table and chairs.

SEE THIS HOUSE: ALYSON'S FABULOUS CONDO KITCHEN REMODEL - TAKING AN 80's KITCHEN INTO THE 21st CENTURY

Small kitchen after remodeling with stainless appliances, black counter tops and cabinets
Alyson's remodeled kitchen
At my friend Alyson Domoto's lovely West Hollywood condo tonight. She is making dinner for us on her new grill. It is really quite nice. We've had good conversation, wonderful champagne and some great cheeses thus far...but the highlight of the evening really is her amazing kitchen remodel.

By day, Alyson Domoto is a pratical corporate attorney. In her off hours, Alyson definitely has a penchant for style and design. Evidence of this is her new condominium.

Alyson moved into her condominium less than a year ago but wasn't shy at all about taking on her design challenges. Her first project...the outdated kitchen.

Here is what it looked like before:

ALYSON'S KITCHEN BEFORE REMODEL
Small kitchen before remodeling with white cabinets and counter tops

Kitchen before remodeling with white cabinets and counter tops
Alyson's kitchen before the remodel- so 80's!!! (above)
Alyson took on this project with her contractor who was familiar with the ins out and outs of the building design. Alyson first task - cabinets; they got the dark wood cabinets from Kitchen Warehouse on Washington Blvd. Then came the fun stuff...a beautiful taupe colored mosaic glass tile backsplash, black granite countertops and stainless appliances.

Notice the lighting has changed significantly too...before there was a weird spaceship-like fluorescent lighting fixture looming over the kitchen (one that Alyson says was probably installed years ago in every unit in the building - oy!), and after the spaceship lighting is replaced with discreet but effective recessed lighting.

This is Alyson's first kitchen renovation and kitchen remodel...excellent work!!!

Oh and dinner was excellent too!

Love the way that Alyson and her contractor decided to take backsplash all the way up the wall to the ceiling. It gives the kitchen more sparkle.

COOL KITCHENS - TWO KITCHENS, LIGHT AND CLASSIC v. DARK AND MODERN - BOTH THE ULTIMATE IN CONTEMPORARY CULINARY STYLE

Kitchen by Deborah Wecselman with recessed paneled cabinet doors, stainless appliances, marble counter top and a dark wood and porcelain tile floor
Photo: Carlos Domenech. Design: Deborah Wecselman

Two kitchens - two very different styles by the very same Miami based designer (photographed by a wonderful Miami based photographer). One thing they do have in common is modern clean lines, distinctive but understated style and a certain level of sophistication and warmth.

I like the white kitchen (above) with the recessed panelled cabinet doors, the stainless appliances, marble counter top and most of all the "inlaid" floor featuring a dark wood border and what looks like a porcelain tile interior. The very industrial kitchen island lighting provides perfect balance for this very home-like room.

The kitchen below is more masculine in feel with the dark brown wood cabinets, the integrated appliances, what looks like a quartz counter top (perhaps CeasarStone) and the very modern island lighting. I love the animal print metal bar stools - they only add to the modern chic style of this high style kitchen setting.
