SEE THIS HOUSE: A VENICE BEACH CRAFTSMAN COTTAGE GOES INTERNATIONAL ECLECTIC!

All photos in this post by Coco of Cococozy

A classic Craftsman style home in Venice Beach, CA charms with a subtle exterior paint color scheme of light grey siding, green and white trim, a portico with traditional white columns and a bright red door in high gloss paint. (above)

This is my friend Juliana Jaoudi's charming Venice Beach home. Juliana (or Julie to those who are in the know) has lived in this lovely beach home for the last five years. The cottage was built back in 1921 and now, after a renovation, features three bedrooms and two baths.

Julie throws fabulous parties at her adorable home. She has a great backyard, deck and party space...a warm and cozy home that has successfully been the backdrop for quite a few of Julie's entertaining evenings (and dance parties) with friends and family.

I have been obsessing about Julie's house for Cococozy for the last few years. Every time I see her, I beg her for photos of her home. After at least 10 requests with no photos supplied, I was convinced that Julie thought I was just the ultimate geek (her "geeky friend") who constantly pestered about pictures for some kind of strange interior design website. I imagined that each time she saw me she thought, "That Coco is so weird...she keeps bugging me about photos of my house...I would NEVER want my house on that kooky little design website." Well that is what I thought.

Turns out, just this weekend, Julie (or Juliana to those who are not in the know) had another gathering...in honor of Memorial Day. She invited a couple dozen of her friends to enjoy a sunny Southern California afternoon and barbecue. (I was responsible for bringing my famous "summer salad" (P.S. it is the same salad I make for winter, fall, spring and any season in between...I just pretend to those who don't know that I make a different salad for each season...my secret...well, before I just gabbed about it here, it was my secret...anyhooooo...back to Julie's house...))

In the middle of this gathering, Julie actually invited me to take photos (phew she doesn't think I am "weird")! An opportunity I couldn't pass up. I dashed out to my car, grabbed my camera and then spent a good part of the bbq photographing every detail in her house (I think the other guests were slightly alarmed by my behavior...and while Julie didn't think I was weird, many of them did I think...oh well, what's a girl to do?).

Because I took so many pictures, I will have to feature them in a series of posts. This first one is focusing on Julie's charming living room.

Julie's well edited living room is filled with colorful accents and natural textures which compliment the Craftsman style home and architecture. (above)

When I asked Julie about the design theme and overall aesthetic objective of her living room, she said the goal was actually NOT to have one specific theme. The living room is filled with a mix of modern, traditional and international pieces of furniture and accessories.

Here's what Julie texted me about her living room design:
"Didn't want one specific theme - thus the Asian nesting tables + the modern hutch + natural window coverings. Wanted it to be comfortable while incorporating accents I've brought home from my travels..."

Exposed brick around the fireplace stays true to the home's Craftsman roots, while two sketches set in simple dark frames add modern design to the mantel. (above)

White built in book shelves on either side of the fireplace provide storage for books and for many of Julie's treasures collected on her many international travel adventures. (above)

A Buddha Julie bought in the dirt market in Beijing, China is displayed in a book shelf and presides over the living room in a regal manner. (above and below)

A trip Julie took to Italy's Amalfi Coast yielded this classic hand painted Italian red and white ceramic urn. (above and below)

A bright orange leather armchair is actually one of Julie's favorite pieces in the living room. While this find comes from Crate and Barrel, Julie says she was excited to "find something with so much character in such a practical place". (above)

Color and texture are the order of the day with a brown and off white dotted linen throw pillow that adds visual interest and charm. (above and below)

A Moroccan side table gracefully contributes to the international allure of the space. (above)

While the room is filled with international finds and high style modern accents, the home's architecture is traditional Craftsman...starting with the front door! (above)

The metal and glass entry table and the avocado green colored ceramic table lamp are modern in form but blend well with the room's stylish and eclectic mix. (above)

A simple arrangement of framed art and mirrors on the main wall welcomes guests as they enter the home. (above)

A collection of floral prints from Julie's trip to Jaipur, India lines the wall facing the home's dining room. Decorative trim and wall moldings make the entire vignette a stunning point of visual interest. (above)

The warm yellow paint used for wall color, the white baseboards, white crown molding and the large windows, make this cozy space bright and cheery. (above)

Bamboo window shades and woven natural fiber drapes allow just the right amount of sunlight into the living room. (above)

Thank you Julie for allowing me to take photos of your living room! A tremendously beautiful space...a space in which your personal touches make the room a decor stand out!

Readers...stand by for more from Julie's house. If I can get my act together, I will do a post on the bedrooms and a guest bath! Stay tuned...

FOLLOWING THE CROWD ON FLOWERING OTTOMANS!

Modern Dose - Lana Wool Ottoman - $395 (Round pouf ottoman or stool covered in hundreds of wool laser cut flowers. 22" diam. Shades of tan) (above)

So way way earlier this year, I was browsing through design websites and happened upon a blog called AphroChic which was featuring these ADORABLE poufs. The ottomans came from ModernDose. I was so tempted to feature them...but decided, in my effort to be original, I would let AphroChic keep the glory on these really cute finds.

Well, so much for not being a copycat. This month, now Metropolitan Home is featuring the Lana Ottoman above as one of its top 100 design picks. ANNOYING...by letting this story go earlier this year, I have been scooped (in a very round about way) by a top design magazine!

Anyhoooooooo...here are two ottomans that are just darling...love the laser cut flowers...again piece of accent furniture that combine whimsy, a feminine touch and modern style all in one. Love them!!!

Modern Dose - Flora Pouf _ $549 (22"L x 22"W x 18"H. Color: Ivory) (above)

COCOCOZY FIND: A POLISHED NICKEL COFFEE TABLE!

William Sonoma Home - Cosmopolitan Coffee Table - $950 (polished nickel plate frame and tempered glass top coffee table) (above)

Cool and chic coffee table. Design is inspired by the Regency Revival style of 1930s Paris. Love the skinny tapered legs, the shiny polished metal plate frame and the overall slender silhouette. Perfect piece to decorate and accent a living room or a sitting area in a sophisticated city house or apartment.

Very cosmopolitan!

TRUNK SHOW ALERT: BOBETTE'S CLEVER MODERN TAKE ON CHIC VINTAGE FASHION!

All photos in this post courtesy Bobette Cohn

Another interior design non-sequitur on fashion. It is worth it.

This time a story about a trunk show that is happening today in New York City...one I am so sorry I have to miss because I am here in Los Angeles!

Got an email the other day from friend Bobette Cohn. I have known Bobette for years...met her through friend JD at a dinner here in L.A. up in Beverly Glen if I remember correctly.

Then, Bobette was in town for some high end shoot with one of her celebrity clients. Bobette is a highly sought after fashion stylist - styling for magazines as Vogue and Italian Vogue and dressing actors of the likes of Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes.

Haven't seen Bobette in a year or so...and then I got an email about a trunk show she was having! It turns out, Bobette has turned her knack and love for style into her own very posh designer collection.

Bobette has turned her love for vintage fashion into a very new style concept. She finds vintage silhouettes and pieces and uses those as the templates for her line. The result is a collection with a classic feel but with a very modern sensibility. I could actually see our first lady Michelle Obama wearing a Bobette creation and/or one of the girls from the MTV hit The Hills (I know many of you might think the Hills girls should not be mentioned in an article about high fashion but I only mention to speak about how this collection is versatile, young, hip and elegant all at the same time...:-)). The collection includes vintage like fabrics including brocades and quilted fabrics...and many pieces with intricate beading and detail. Love it all...the dresses, the skirts, jackets, sweaters and blouses all exude elegance, charm and fantastic style.

Anyhooo, Bobette's line runs from $700-1500. Right now, pieces are available directly through her at bobettecohn@hotmail.com or via phone at 212-644-9172.

Most importantly, if you are in New York today...go to her trunk show (see invite below).

If you go, please send me pictures of anything you buy and I will do a post! Have fun shopping! I will be jealous and happy for you at the same time (the two emotions can coexist).

Here are some additional samples from Bobette's fab collection below!

Love this feminine pink cocktail dress with the sash waistband! (above)

For you interior decorating and design purists....will get back to design, decorating and all that (blah blah blah) in the next post. These pieces were too amazing...had to talk about them. Plus, you never know...a little fashion may inspire in home decor!

A FRENCH INSPIRED WALL MOUNTED HEADBOARD!

Wisteria - French Country Headboard in White Wood - $599 for twin; $1099 for king (above)

I like this idea for a headboard. Simple white wood planks mounted on the wall behind a twin bed. Put two together and that makes a king headboard. Would tone down the country look by making sure all accessories and other furniture were modern classics. I think the blue painted wall in this photo above works...so with these wall headboards, color is the order of the day behind them...a subtle shade of green or a neutral linen wall paint would look awesome too.

Only question I have is what do you do if you have a queen bed????

OPRAH'S FAVORITE INTERIOR DECORATOR NATE BERKUS HAS A PIG IN HIS BATHROOM!

Just last week, Esther Chen of People.com emailed me to alert me that People.com is featuring video of Nate Berkus, Oprah's interior designer, giving a house tour of his Chicago apartment.

Wasn't all that interested in this...but I watched the video anyway. The video runs a few minutes so I knew I could focus for at least that amount of time...good or bad. Good news was that this short video blip wasn't bad at all.

The highlight of Nate's home tour for me was his posh bathroom which features a stand alone tub (looks like a Waterworks tub), white subway tiled walls, a marble mosaic tiled floors (looks like a hexagon Cararra marble mosaic) .... drum roll please...and what looks like a leather pig. Love the bathroom...love the pig even more for some reason. Is that weird that I like this pig more then I like Nate?

Turns out home furnishing store Jonathan Adler has a similar pig in stock (no pun intended) and it is almost $800! Gotta be hog wild over pigs as home accessories in order to buy this one! I like pigs...but wonder if I like them enough to buy this...why buy a pig when I could buy a gorgeous pair of Manolo Blahniks?

Jonathan Adler - Pig in Leather Animals - $795 (handcrafted in full grain leather. 29” Long, 17” High, 13” Wide)

Would you put a pig in your bath? Or is Nate taking pig love too far?

SEE THIS HOUSE: BEACH HOUSE CHIC!

All photos in this post courtesy Windsor Smith Home.

Outside deck and patio at a California beach house (above)

Went out to the beach today for brunch. Was in Santa Monica. Seeing all the people on bikes (beach cruisers), skateboards and carrying around their yoga mats as if they were carrying around a badge of honor of sorts, made me start thinking...maybe I should move to the beach? Should I? Huh?

Anyhooooo, got home and decided to post pictures from this gorgeous Windsor Smith designed ocean front home. Love her design and decor sensibility.

The very fresh and bright beach house living room features red Chippendale armchairs, a classic white sofa, a stunning armoire with mirrored doors all set against a pristine white backdrop.(above)

A turquoise high gloss painted wood floor is the highlight of the beach kitchen and eat in dining area or breakfast nook. Two surfboards serve as decoration in the dining area featuring an striped yellow and white upholstered banquet and a round table. (above)

A blue and white striped sofa or settee, a classic white chandelier and twin beds with pink tufted accent pillows make the bedroom a soft, peaceful and inviting space (above)
