SMART DESIGN: THE GREAT DIVIDE!

I like rooms...I like defined spaces...hence I'm not the biggest fan of a completely open floor plan. I like the idea dining in a dining room, living in a living room, reading in a library, doing work in a home office...not the biggest fan of doing everthing in one amorphous space (this aversion may be due to the fact that in my little house my living and dining are all in one...and I wish I had separate spaces).

Love this architectural solution pictured here...a floating dividing wall. In this flat (or...errrr...apartment...flat only crept in because of the Royal Wedding), the home owners have the best of both worlds...an open feeling floor plan with defined spaces. This dividing wall successfully separates the dining room from living room without making either space feel too closed in...a great solution for a small space perhaps. Plus, the wall gives residents the ability to hang more art!

What do you think? Do you like open floor plans? If so, why (I can be convinced to like them btw with a good argument)? If not, why not? Do you like this solution?

Happy Friday!

SIMPLY A ROYAL WEDDING!

My interior design non sequitur of the day...

I said I wasn't going to watch it live. I have a big day ahead today so I had no intentions of being up during the wee hours of the night to watch the Royal Wedding. Why watch it live when there are DVRs? Nope not watching. That was my resolve. Even spoke with good friend Alyssa who lives in London a few days back and swore that I would NOT be watching the Royal Wedding live.

I watched the Royal Wedding live. Short story really...went to sleep very early (11p is very early for me)...woke up in the middle of the night to get a bit of water...turns out, I woke up at 2:30am here in Los Angeles...so I turned on the t.v.! Then I was in.

A lovely wedding indeed. I thought Kate Middleton or I guess I don't know what to call her now that she is an HRH...looked fantastic. Her dress was perfect. Simple, elegant, perfectly clean lines...sounds like I am describing a room or furniture...but the architecture of the future queen's wedding day attire was just right.  William looked quite lovely too.  Nice wedding.

Then there were Fergie's girls adding some Hollywood style humor to the quite regal British affair. Princesses Eugenia and Bea looked a little kooky/eccentric in their hats. They looked like characters out of Disney movie or something. I guess though, more power to them...they dared to be oh so different.

I did go back to sleep after they left the church...now I'm hurting a bit this a.m.! Oh dear. Where is my friend caffeine? Where are you? Must stop off and get my morning tea with soy (I drink that every morning...not just on Royal Wedding days...fyi) and meet up with caffeine then!

I guess the moral to this story is never say never? You'd think by now I would have learned to never say never? I guess I'll never learn...LOL!

More on interiors...coming up...

A LAKE HOUSE KITCHEN!

Love this lake house eat-in kitchen designed by renowned New York architect Gil Schafer.

The kitchen is in a lake side home built in 1919. The home was clearly renovated respecting the history and charm but updated adding modern conveniences and stylish detailing.

I am a little obsessed with built in banquet seating so I'm loving the wrap around built in window bench that doubles as breakfast nook seating.  And the windows...hello!  The corner of  paned windows is magnificent...letting light and cheer stream into this sweet cooking and eating space.  I also am adoring the shiny painted wood floor (looks like a light blue or grey color).

The kitchen has a modern country feel with bead board cabinet doors, a stainless farmhouse sink and upper cabinet interiors getting a lovely dose of lime green color! (above)
What do you think of this lake house eat-in?  Would you want to eat in here?  What might you take...what might you leave?  Please tell.

Happy Thursday!

P.S.  1) I need a lake house;  2) wearing a cute purple Tory Burch dress to work today...have drinks tonight; 3)  Now that Lent is over and I can go back to eating bread...need to show some restraint...difficult; 4) was up until 2:30a dealing with a potential COCOCOZY client abroad; 5) caffeine essential this morning; 6) back to purple dress, was getting it fitted and the tailor kept looking at my hips and shaking his head...I think he thinks dress is too tight or that I need bigger...dress is size 4...I think it fits just right but we'll see...now I think everyone is looking at hips and shaking head thanks to tailor...lady tailor though thought dress was just right; 7) Juan, my handy guy, rescued my huge market umbrella from my roof on Tuesday...now I need new market umbrella as this one keeps flying out of stand, see COCOCOZY Twitter feed for pictures of flying market umbrella under Dilemma of the Day; 8) I could go on and on but I will let you get back to your day!  Have a good one dear readers!

SEE THIS HOUSE: BEMUSED BY A BEACH COTTAGE IN OLD GREENWICH!

So...once again...saved by COCOCOZY readers!

Got an email yesterday from Lucy...Lucy works with talented designer Lauren Muse of Muse Interiors in Greenwich, CT. Lucy was asking if she might submit some design photos from the Muse portfolio. I of course said yes...and to my surprise today...I received these wonderful photos in my inbox.

This is a 6,000 square foot "cottage" in the beach community of Old Greenwich. It has 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms and 2 powder rooms. The home was newly built back in 2009. (P.S. I wish my cottage in the Hollywood Hills was 6000 square feet...instead it is only around 700 square feet and I'm probably being generous...jealousy about to set in...breathe...relax...no room for cottage envy in this post...okay...I've calmed myself...)

Lauren Muse and team had at making this "cottage" or large house into a fresh cozy space.  They succeeded!

My favorite rooms I think are the bedroom and the kitchen. Love the soft color palette used of light camels, light blues and whites used throughout the house. Lovely.  Am also loving the dining room wallpaper...and all of the drapery throughout the house.  So perfect for a beach abode!

I like!

Thank you Lauren and Lucy from Muse Interiors for the photos!

Readers which room is your favorite?

Happy Wednesday!

PREPPY HOME SWEET HOME - LILLY PULITIZER NEW FURNITURE COLLECTION 2!

Lilly Pulitzer - T Cushion Loveseat in Turquoise (above)
Okay still gushing about the new Lilly Pulitzer furniture collection due out this summer. I think the oh so preppy color palette is so appropriate for this weekend - Easter weekend...also for spring, summer and just right for any beach abode (whether it be a casual beach shack, a cute ocean front cottage, or that waterfront mansion that pops up so regularly in my dreams).

I'm loving the architecture of the furniture and the bright colors (apparently manufactured by HFI Brands for Lilly P). Might have to conquer my phobia of bright colors in home decor for one of these darling perfectly cheerful upholstered pieces.

Lilly Pulitzer - Rowan Bench - $1646 ("Shell We Hotty Pink" fabric)(above)

Lilly Pulitzer - Morgan Ottoman - $4844 (Octagonal shaped ottoman with green white trellis rope "In a Twist Lifeguard" fabric)(above)

My favorite - the little loveseat! Any of these upholstered Lilly Pulitzer pieces strike your preppy fancy?

Oh...after my Lilly post yesterday I received an email from reader Elizabeth W from Haute Indoor Couture blog (and her Design in a Day DC interior design firm)...apparently she saw the Lilly Pulizter collection in High Point, NC earlier this month. Go to COCOCOZY Twitter to see some of Elizabeth's photos of the Lilly P. furniture line booth at the High Point show.

Oh, on a total side note, I think it is amusing when people (including myself) get so mad about unimportant things. In fact, I realized I was getting all twisted up the other day over something so minor that it warrants me embarrassing myself by telling you all the story in hopes that in the future I remember to keep everything in perspective so I don't have to embarrass myself again and tell another story so I remember to keep things in perspective (circular)...you get the idea...right?   I was at the salon place earlier this week fuming and fussing that they wouldn't let me squeeze in an eyebrow wax before my next beauty appointment. I was looking at my blackberry, shooting daggers with my eyes at the receptionist who was holding me back from getting my eyebrows perfectly waxed, I was making exasperated sounding noises...the works. All of sudden a kid came over and sat down next to me (he must have been 15) and said "It's a long wait isn't it?"...and I replied in an extreme huff, "I know and I've been here for 15 minutes and there are people available and they won't let me get my eyebrows done because they are closing and my other appointment cannot wait they say if I'm getting brows done...but I could have gotten my brows done by now. I'm so annoyed...", and then I literally huffed out loud (insert a big cry baby waaaa waaaa booo hoooo too). The kid took my rant into consideration and then put all in perspective when he smiled knowingly and simply said, "Other than that, how's your day going?", and then he smiled and nodded. I didn't really have an answer...but it certainly took me out of my tailspin. I laughed and smiled and remembered about not sweating the small stuff!

Again, thank you Lainie for all of the photos and info!

Hope you have a great day!
Happy Friday!

COCOCOZY + LILLY PULITZER'S NEW FURNITURE COLLECTION = LOTS OF LOVE!

Lilly Pulitzer - Breakers Dining Table - $2000 (Salmon pink dining table with carved detaling)(above)
Have I been living under a rock? (...the answer is yes...but for these purposes let's make this a rhetorical question...)

How did I just discover yesterday that renowned and venerable preppy fashion and lifestyle brand Lilly Pulitzer is launching a furniture collection this summer? Hello?

Once I found out, I immediately emailed the nice people over at Lilly Pulitzer and got some pretty fabulous images of the new furniture collection set to launch this summer!

Bright pinks, eye catching blues, classic lines but innovative style...so spring, so summer...love!

When I first laid eyes on these home furnishings I thought..."oh this collection is so perfectly preppy, bright, cheerful and Lilly"...and then I thought in a self involved sort of way, "wow, this collection is so perfectly a fit with COCOCOZY".  So here we are...COCOCOZY + Lilly Pulizter!  I also added a little from the fashion side of the Lilly Pulitzer line too...very cute bright summer clothing - dresses, skirts, pants tops and accessories (I need to conquer my fear of bright clothing and just try out something colorful this summer...brave...remember my New Year's resolution...)!

Am extremely happy I have a pretty much first early peek at the collection according to Lilly's PR people! Yippee!!!

Lilly Pulitzer - Dolly Dress Embroidered - $268 (Pink shift dress)(above)

COCOCOZY Plaid Solid Pink - $345 (24"x24". Linen. Made in the U.S.)(above)

Lilly Pulitzer - Seagate Gathering Height Table - $1300 (Blue fretwork base, glass top)(above)

Lilly Pulitzer - Naava Wrap Skirt Printed - $98 (Reversible wrap skirt.  Poplin)(above)

COCOCOZY LOGO Throw - $285 (100% cotton knit. Reversible jacquard. Made in the U.S.)(above)

Lilly Pulizter - O'hara Bar Cart - $1500 (Metal faux bamboo bar cart with glass shelves.  Gold finish)(above)

Ric Rac Bangle Set - $58 (Set of 3 enamel stackable bangles)(above)

COCOCOZY - Quatrefoil Pillow Navy - $315 (20"x20" Linen, self welt. Custom order. Made in the U.S.)(above)

Lilly Pulitzer - Tangiers Chest - $1300 (above)
So to be clear, the Lilly Pulitzer furniture collection is coming this summer...
I'm not a pink person but I think I'm loving the pink dining table the most...go figure...also loving those ric rac bangles!

Thanks Lainie K. (Lilly P's furniture line publicist) for getting me all of the information!

Tomorrow, stay tuned for some of the Lilly Pulitzer upholstered furniture.  So definitely cute.

Happy Thursday!

SEE THIS POOL HOUSE!

Adore this little stone pool house with interiors fashioned by renowned Atlanta designer Phoebe Howard. Could this little nest and poolside retreat be just as cute as any home. I think so.

The high beamed ceilings are amazing in the living room.  The wine barrel chandelier, the slate floors, diamond patterned tone on tone white rug and the cozy furnishings make the living space so inviting. The two toned counters in the kitchen and the pebble mosaic floor there are just darling...LOVE LOVE LOVE this little cottage!  Love the drapery choice...but could also see some COCOCOZY Plaid Solid drapery panels working in this space too...I'll have to call Phoebe and see if she'll do a curtain switch out...clearly need Phoebe to use COCOCOZY in her next pool house!!!

What do you think of this pool house?  Would any of you want to make this backyard retreat a home?  I would.

Happy Wednesday!

COLOR WATCH: DELICIOUS AVOCADO GREEN FURNITURE & THINGS!

cb2 - go-cart camo two-shelf table-media cart - $149 (Steel with green powdercoat finish. Casters)(above)
I like green things. I love avocado green things. I have green in my house...feel like it is a good earth color but a color nonetheless. Blends well with almost anything. In furniture and accessories, I think this shade of green works!

Flavor Paper - Cycloid  Wallpaper - $250 per roll (Green geometric wallpaper.  Each roll 27"x15') (above)

Anthropologie - Lakarri Curtain - $208-268 (Comes in varied lengths) (above)

Luna Bazaar - Capiz Lotus Candle Holder - $13.95 (Made of natural shells. Grass green color.  Used with votive candles or tealight candles)(above)

Z Gallerie - Pierre Sofa - $1299 (above)
I think I could use that media cart for something or another...or the green sofa could work too!

Do you like this shade of green? Or do you hate it? If you like, where are you using it in your home. If you hate it, do say why!

Happy Tuesday!

LET THERE BE STRIPES!

There something cheerful about this space. Not quite sure why I am drawn to this space but I am.

Could it be the light in the room? The high ceilings? Don't know.

I wouldn't mind visiting this room and sitting for awhile to have a cup of tea (or a glass of champagne if someone forced it on me).

I'm not a huge fan of bold stripes on walls...but for some reason the grey and white painted stripes work.

There doesn't seem to be any one thing that is supremely special about this room...but it feels slightly special to me. Huh? Bizarre.

What does your design eye say about this space? What do you think of this living room? Does it have the same appeal for you?

Happy Monday!

WEEKEND PHOTO!

When opportunity knocks make sure to fling open the double doors!

I like the idea of a double front door...let's more light in when open, makes for a grander entrance and means more even more opportunity...right?

Nice entry hall...nice view...

Need to get a double front door installed in my little tiny cottage here in the Hollywood Hills.

What does your front hall and door look like? Is it just right or do you have plans to freshen it up? Would love to hear.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Happy Saturday!

COCOCOZY ARCHIVES: UGLY OR PRETTY? HOODWINKED BY HERMES!

Lately, as I am in the midst of growing the COCOCOZY home textiles collection, I've been thinking about marketing and sales. I got a chuckle earlier today as I was telling new COCOCOZY sales rep JG about how I was once possibly hoodwinked into buying a questionable item at one of the most elite brands in the world...right on Rodeo drive (btw...like southerners say "I was over served" when they've drank to much alcohol; I am saying I was hoodwinked when I might have just really been impulsive...I like to say I was hoodwinked though...takes all responsibility away from me...that's right!) Hoodwinking is not a tactic we want to use for the COCOCOZY brand and not one typically used at this major brand either at all  but thinking about this story that actually happened to me got me to laugh!

Please make sure to read the update at the bottom of the post...life is filled with ironies!

For those of you who have seen this story, I hope you'll weigh in again. The majority of you, I know haven't read it because I had a much smaller readership back then, I hope you'll weigh in now!

So today I bring you one from the COCOCOZY archives...UGLY OR PRETTY? HOODWINKED BY HERMES!  You be the judge!

***

This is my Hermes scarf. This is the Hermes scarf that I was duped into buying.

Here's how this became mine...

I was at the Hermes store in Beverly Hills on Rodeo Drive awhile back (August 2009)....on a mission to buy a new Hermes scarf. Thought it would be nice to have a classic silk scarf to wear as a belt with black dresses, jeans or black pants. Chic preppy. That was my goal. Black gold and white...or maybe one in that classic Hermes orange. Definitely with an equestrian feel (as I used to ride horses years ago...and love to pretend that I still have the horse woman in me by occasionally incorporating horsey things into my life). I knew what I wanted...I had a clear vision...focus...resolve.

Well, I walked into the store to buy my scarf just as that day's Birkin bag had arrived. If you haven't been to Hermes lately, in place of the renowned Birkin waiting list, Hermes has now started the clever practice of only releasing one of these $10,000+ bags a day...in a surprise daily ritual with the manager walking the bag down from a secret storage area at an unknown time. This Birkin bag "practice" creates a very bizarre in-store hysteria on a day-to-day basis with uber shoppers thronging the store in hopes of getting their hands on the leather purse of the day. The bags usually are sold within 10 minutes I was later told by one of the sales people. Only 10 minutes to sell a purse that costs over $10,000!!! That's smart...trickery....or magic...you decide?

Well, all I wanted was a scarf.

So as I was standing at the scarf counter speaking with one of the Hermes ladies...the Birkin bag arrived. I was almost shoved aside. A girl and her boyfriend, a middle aged woman who everyone seemed to know, an older husband and wife, and lady who looked like a tourist (whatever that means) were all there waiting...to see the color, to decide whether they would plunk down the $10,000. All eager, all with bated breath. It was then that I got distracted. Totally distracted (which would be much to my chagrin).

Watching this Birkin bag purchasing spectacle made me for one moment think that I needed that day's Birkin. My heart started to race. My American Express felt like it was burning a whole in my not so chic Tod's bag. If that bag was not taken, I was going to buy it. Lucky for me (and my bank account), the young girl and her boyfriend, who seemed to have been first in line, won the coveted bag that day. I didn't even have the option to purchase. What? Why not? How did these people know to even be here? How can I get one? This is not fair? Why didn't I get the memo? Why wasn't I in the know? These were all things that were running through my mind as the Birkin sailed out of the store and I was left at the war torn scarf counter.

Bewildered and bemused, I continued my hunt for the perfect silk scarf. I should have left after witnessing that Birkin whirlwind. I had lost all senses. While I had told the sales lady that I definitely and absolutely wanted a more traditional Hermes patterned scarf (you know the kind that oozes classic style), I did feel a bit like a second class citizen and was very impressionable at that point. Here were all of the ladies ready to fork over $10K and all I wanted was a measly $375 scarf (I know $375 is not cheap...I know...that's why I'm telling this story...it was crazy...craziness...but the whirlwind of the Birkin made me lose my senses I tell you. It did! Aaaarrggghhhh!!!!)

So when the sales lady said in her best French accent, "Zees eeez za scarf you must geeeet. Eeet is so very very chic....I adorrrhhhee eeet!", I looked at the scarf and thought to myself, "Really? I don't know? Is this a joke? Maybe she's right? I don't know. I think it is kind of awful. Ooops, I should never even think anything is awful in Hermes. If I do, I may never be in the Hermes know. Well, she just said many of her clients are scarf collectors and this scarf is the one to have this season. I don't know? It seems...so...so...I don't know? Maybe if I buy one of these more daring scarves, I will feel like I am in the know...like the Birkin bag shoppers. I'll have a collectors Hermes scarf. That's it yes! Forget staid traditional. I'm going daring. I'm part of the "in" scarf collectors crowd. There...yes...aha!"

The scarf she carefully unfolded in front of me is the scarf you see here. Hmmm....

The scarf features a mish mosh of colors, patterns, themes, eras, a cornucopia of flora, fauna and half of a Native American man dressed in traditional garb (notice there is only half of this man on the scarf). Oh yes, did I mention, the palm fronds, the tiger and the medieval times horses?

So the scarf is mine. I've worn it once. I've tried it on a couple of times and even as a belt it doesn't seem to work.

Now I leave it to you...is my Hermes silk scarf UGLY OR PRETTY?

Am I missing something here? I think you know where I stand on this...if you don't by now, I'll just call a spade a spade...I think it is leaning towards ugly...

Hmmm....

Hmmmm....

To tie this into home decor...maybe I can salvage this in some way. I won't ever wear it but maybe I could frame it and make it a piece of art? Hang it on a wall? Add style and panache to my home?!#$%^&... I don't think so.

If all of you see some beauty here...I'll reconsider my point of view...I'm waiting...weigh in please!

****

Important Update...I was just on the Hermes site...today 4/15/11 and I noticed that a version of my scarf (it is called Carre en Carres) is still being sold at Hermes and it is now $580...my scarf has appreciated over time! This is crazy. The scarf I've made fun of for years is actually more expensive now than it was when I bought it. I guess there was no hoodwinking going on after all...someone thinks it's pretty enough that its value has grown! Whoa! Over time, I have found uses for my scarf...I've worn it as a belt (hiding the design), a drawer liner, a keepsake...but I've still never been daring enough to actually wear it as scarf!

Was just on the phone with my good stylish friend Amie (A.Ro.) who works in the fashion industry. Years ago she said the scarf was "in" and I said not. A.Ro. is on her way to Paris and is at the airport right now. She just called and asked me why I was laughing...and I reminded her about the scarf and the story and told her the scarf has apppreciated to $580...all she said was, "I told you. That scarf was on trend. I knew it.". I guess I'm still not on trend!

Please weigh in...do you think this scarf is ugly or pretty?

Happy Friday!

ROOM LOVE - BLUE & WHITE DELIGHT!

Simple one today...I like this room...blue and white done just right! (sorry for all of the rhyming...LOL!)

Colorful, simple, playful with clean lines. Nice living room! I actually love the blue and white zig zag chevron and diamond two pattern rug and the wonderful white slipcovered sofas. The dusty dark blue walls are quite nice too along with the very subtle pops of orange in the pillows and flowers.  LOVELY!

What do you think friends? Love, like, neutral or dislike. Do tell!

Happy Thursday!

P.S. Had a nice dinner out last night - nice views, good company, very loud wait staff (felt like they were yelling every time they spoke to us), good food...check out COCOCOZY Twitter to see where.

P.P.S. Also loving the new TradHome online magazine...the brand new joint venture between Traditional Home and Lonny magazines. Very nice. Would be even nicer if a COCOCOZY pillow or throw had been featured.;-) Biased clearly.  I managed to make it through with no COCOCOZY in sight and so enjoyed it...guess I can be unbiased...maybe...maybe not...maybe?  So many great online magazines out in this last week...between Trad Home and High Gloss Magazine (where a COCOCOZY throw was featured...yup.), have been busy catching up on the latest in design and decor. I like!

METAL FURNITURE THAT WORKS!

Casamidy - Diego Canopy Bed - $4500 queen (above)
My Casamidy crush continues...

Way back when, I did a very very very very long COCOCOZY post on Casamidy.  Casamidy is a  Mexico based company owned by Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada.  These furniture designers have a wonderful trove of metal based furniture that I absolutely adore.

There is something so substantial yet airy about metal furniture.  I like a well designed metal piece...hence I like all things Casamidy.

Anyhooo...I was on Facebook (the place where everything in the world happens) and I saw that Casamidy had a few new pieces to chat about so I immediately (almost in a frenzy) emailed Jorge at Casamidy for photos an information. Lucky for me, he was happy to oblige.

So last night, I went to dinner at Fig & Olive with my good friend, event and wedding planner extraordinaire Yifat Oren of her eponymous firm Yifat Oren & Associates.  The big news is that Yifat just fiinished doing Reese Witherspoon's wedding last month in Ojai!  Reese Witherspoon is my friend Yifat's client?  Yes indeed.  So cool.  Am very proud of Yifat because first of all she knows how to be oh so discreet - none of her friends knew that she was hired to plan Reese's wedding!  Secondly, from what I hear, the wedding was enchanting - exquisitely done in true Yifat Oren fashion!  So fantastic!

Needless to say, my dear Yifat Oren and I had tons to catch up on since we haven't seen each other in a few months. We actually had to pull out a pad of paper and make a dinner discussion agenda. We got through all topics and many more by the way...tah dah! People always laugh at me and think I am strange (simultaneously) because I often like to write up a little agenda at the beginning of a catch up session with friends I haven't seen in awhile. It is just so we don't forget anything. Yifat, a woman after my own heart, did not laugh nor did she think I was strange (at least I don't think she thought I was strange). Yifat literally pulled out a yellow notepad after I suggested an agenda and made the discussion list herself...LOVE HER.

There is a connection here to Casamidy and this furniture so stick with me. It was about 6 months ago, when I was at Yifat's lovely Hollywood Hills home that she shares with her darling hubby and public relations guru Jonathan Cutler, that she re-introduced me to the world of Casamidy.  We spent a good hour, much to Jonny's chagrin, ooohhhing and aahhing over all of the lovely finds on the Casamidy site...a definite girl bonding moment! So it is fitting that today I would do another Casamidy post!

Ixelles Sofa - $6000 in leather (98w x 30d x 41.5 16h seat) (above)

Almidi etagere - $1400 (Metal mesh, 1" flat iron. 58.5h x 35.5 x 16d) (above)
Anyhoooo....Jorge and Anne-Marie of Casamidy have a Belgium apartment that is going to be featured in the May issue of Elle Decor!  Exciting.  Make sure to get a look at that!

And, this Thursday, Yifat is curating a bridal event on Gilt!  Fantastic!

What do you think of this metal furniture btw? Go over to the Casamidy site and let me know which pieces you love the most (I love the mirrors!)!

Happy Tuesday!
